Tulip Fly Away

Tulip Fly Away

Lily-flowered tulip with vivid red petals edged in yellow. Striking choice for borders, naturalistic drifts, and windy sites.

Description

Tulip Fly Away is a vibrant lily-flowered tulip that combines delicate form with intense colour. Each bloom is a vivid red with sharply defined golden yellow petal edges. The narrow, flared petals reflex outward as the bloom matures, giving the appearance of wings in flight — hence the name. Flowering in mid-late spring, it reaches 45–50 cm and moves with exceptional grace in spring breezes, making it an ideal choice for naturalistic drifts or display beds requiring vertical motion.

It performs best in full sun, in well-drained soil with moderate fertility. Like other lily-flowered types, it prefers open, airy planting and does not thrive in heavy, compacted clay unless deeply amended. Its slender stems are surprisingly resilient in Irish conditions, tolerating coastal wind and spring showers well.

Pollinator access is moderate to good due to its open, elegant flower form — especially useful when paired with Muscari, native bluebells, or early wildflowers. Fly Away is perfect for motion-based planting schemes, long border backdrops, or high-impact public displays that seek both drama and elegance.
