Dracunculus vulgaris

Dracunculus vulgaris

Striking purple-black spathe and central spadix. Exotic and architectural. Best for bold borders or wild garden statements. Hardy and low maintenance.

Description

Dracunculus vulgaris, commonly known as the Dragon Arum, is a dramatic, architectural bulb producing a huge purple-black spathe surrounding a tall central spadix. Flowering in early summer, it makes a powerful statement in exotic borders, jungle-style planting, or wild gardens with a Gothic or Mediterranean feel.

Native to the Balkans and southern Europe, this species thrives in well-drained soil and full sun or partial shade. It’s hardy in most UK and Irish regions and will naturalise slowly in warm, sheltered sites. The large, divided foliage is attractively marbled and adds to its exotic appearance.

Noted for its unusual carrion scent at flowering — which attracts flies for pollination — Dracunculus is best placed away from seating areas or entrances. Landscapers value it for visual impact, minimal maintenance needs, and its ability to thrive in poor, dry soils once established.
