Geranium tuberosum

Geranium tuberosum

Drought-tolerant, tuberous geranium with soft lavender flowers. Excellent for naturalising in wildflower borders, gravel planting, or low-input meadows.

Description

Geranium tuberosum is a spring-flowering, tuberous-rooted geranium native to the Mediterranean. It produces masses of pale lavender to violet-pink flowers above finely divided foliage in April and May, forming airy clumps that suit both informal borders and naturalistic plantings.

Well-suited to drier soils and sunny aspects, this species excels in free-draining ground, making it ideal for gravel gardens, dry meadows, and low-maintenance perennial schemes. It will die back in early summer, making room for heat-tolerant species, and returns reliably year after year.

It’s particularly useful in drought-resilient landscaping, pollinator-focused schemes, and rewilding areas where traditional perennials may struggle. It combines beautifully with Allium sphaerocephalon or Ornithogalum umbellatum.
