Description
Colchicum autumnale, also known as Meadow Saffron or Naked Ladies, is a UK and European native bulb producing soft, crocus-like lilac flowers in autumn. Its ability to bloom leafless adds dramatic interest to grassland and naturalised spaces at a time of year when colour is scarce.
A valuable species for landscapers focusing on biodiversity planting or naturalised wildflower-style borders, it thrives in damp, undisturbed areas such as orchard grass, woodland edges, or waterside meadows. While all parts are toxic and not suitable for grazed areas, it’s perfectly safe in designed non-edible plantings.
Foliage appears in spring, matures, and dies back by summer, so it works well in wild areas with minimal mowing. Avoid heavy competition or areas with aggressive turf species.
