Description
Crocus speciosus ssp. is the botanical, wild-form autumn crocus, typically bearing more slender flowers than named cultivars but with equally striking soft lilac to lavender petals and vivid orange styles. This wild type excels in Irish landscapes focused on ecological integrity, habitat planting, or wildflower-meadow extension into the autumn months.
Plant in full sun or dappled shade with free-draining soil. It naturalises reliably, returning annually with minimal input. Best combined with Cyclamen hederifolium, Colchicum autumnale, and early autumn perennials like Aster divaricatus or Sedum spectabile. A favourite for conservation schemes, rewilding projects, and biodiverse estates.
