Description
Allium carolinianum is a distinctive ornamental onion native to the Himalayan region, prized for its rosy-lilac flower heads, which appear on sturdy 40–60 cm stems in late spring to early summer. The spherical blooms are slightly looser than other globe alliums, giving it a light, airy appearance ideal for naturalised settings or softening hard lines in public borders.
This variety is well suited for meadow planting, parkland schemes, and pollinator-friendly landscapes, drawing bees and hoverflies early in the season. Its broad basal leaves die back gracefully as flowering begins, allowing for tidy integration into mixed herbaceous schemes.
Underplant with hardy geraniums or ornamental grasses to mask foliage die-back and extend interest.
