Description
Tulip Negrita Double takes the much-loved qualities of Negrita and magnifies them in luxuriant double-bloom form. Each flower is densely packed with layers of purple petals, veined with violet and plum, creating a plush, peony-like effect. As the blooms mature, the outer petals may soften to lilac tones while the inner layers remain rich and velvety, producing depth and variation that enhances visual appeal. The sheer fullness of the blooms makes them feel decadent and theatrical, a tulip designed for statement planting.
Flowering in late spring at 40–50 cm, Negrita Double carries the tulip season into its final phase, offering strong performance in Irish conditions. Its heavy blooms are borne on sturdy stems, yet like most double tulips it is less accessible to pollinators, so best combined with biodiversity companions such as Allium Purple Sensation, Nectaroscordum siculum, or Camassia to maintain ecological value.
Planted in autumn, Negrita Double flourishes in formal borders, feature containers, and civic displays where its dense, luxurious flowers can be fully appreciated. Designers often use it alongside single forms like Negrita for layered textural contrast, or with pale partners such as Tulip Maureen or blush-toned Muscadet to create a high-contrast designer palette. In floristry, it is particularly valued for its richness, acting as a substitute for peonies in arrangements, with exceptional vase life and dramatic depth.
