Description
Tulip Honky Tonk is a delightful heirloom botanical tulip, treasured since the mid-20th century for its soft primrose-yellow blooms washed flushed with a soft pink blush. Its lightly fragrant, star-shaped flowers open wide in warm sunshine, releasing a gentle scent and providing valuable early pollen for bees emerging from winter dormancy.
Plant species Tulip Honky Tonk where softness, early detail and naturalising character are more important than large hybrid flower size. It has a lighter appearance than stronger red, orange or bicolour species tulips,
Honky Tonk is best used where its quiet colouring and low habit can be appreciated close up. It suits courtyard containers, raised planters, estate path edges, public garden collections, gravel borders, hotel garden paths, rockery-style beds and smaller commercial landscapes. It should be planted in repeated groups rather than isolated bulbs, allowing the pale yellow flowers to create a soft wash of colour at ground level. Honky Tonk has good value for naturalistic planting as it is adaptable for pots and borders, as well as naturalising in meadows, lawns and wildflower schemes.
Use Honky Tonk with blue muscari, early crocus, low narcissus, white species tulips, soft apricot botanical tulips, fine grasses and simple spring perennials. Its pastel tone makes it especially useful where stronger tulip colours would look too heavy for the setting.
