Lilium Asiatic Red

Lilium Asiatic Red

Deep red, upright blooms with strong stems. Early-flowering Asiatic lily ideal for formal beds, commercial displays, and municipal planting schemes.

Description

Lilium Asiatic Red is a bold, high-impact lily cultivar that delivers a stunning wash of rich crimson-red blooms in early to mid-summer. Known for its sturdy stems and upward-facing, unscented flowers, this variety reaches up to 80–100 cm tall, making it an excellent choice for the mid to rear of sunny borders or for adding vertical interest in mixed perennial schemes. In Irish gardens, it thrives in full sun or light dappled shade and prefers well-drained yet moisture-retentive soils, particularly in raised beds or slightly elevated sites where rainfall is plentiful.

Ideal for formal landscapes, mass plantings, or contemporary designs, Lilium Asiatic Red pairs exceptionally well with cool-hued bulbs such as Allium Purple Sensation, or Eremurus. When underplanted with hardy geraniums or ornamental grasses, the contrast of textures elevates the overall planting effect. This lily’s long-lasting blooms are a favourite among florists for their longevity as cut flowers.

While not strongly fragrant, its vivid colour and nectar-rich anthers can still provide a modest food source for local pollinators, especially bees and hoverflies during calm, sunny days. Plant in groups of 3–5 for dramatic effect, and apply a mulch of organic matter in spring to lock in moisture and suppress weeds.
