Eremurus stenophyllus (Bungei)

Eremurus stenophyllus (Bungei)

Compact foxtail lily with golden yellow spires. Early flowering and drought-tolerant. Ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens, and naturalistic landscaping schemes.

Description

Eremurus stenophyllus, also known as Bungei, is a compact, fine-leaved Foxtail Lily producing slender golden-yellow flower spikes with orange anthers. Flowering earlier than most Eremurus, it stands around 60–90 cm tall, making it a superb choice for smaller spaces, front-of-border structure, and dry garden schemes.

Hardy and drought-tolerant once established, E. stenophyllus thrives in full sun and free-draining, sandy or stony soils. Landscapers favour it for hot, dry, south-facing beds, Mediterranean-style borders, or layered prairie plantings where height variation and succession flowering are key.

Its narrow, grassy foliage is also well-behaved and blends seamlessly with other perennials. A great architectural accent for rock gardens, gravel borders, or compact modern schemes. Eremurus stenophyllus is also a strong performer in mass plantings and prairie-style mixes, adding structure and long-lasting seasonal colour. Hardy and well-suited for the Irish climate.

Trade Tip: Best planted in clusters of 5+ for visual impact. Ensure crowns are slightly raised above soil level to prevent rot in wetter climates.
