Dracunculus vulgaris

Dracunculus vulgaris

A dramatic, architectural arum with deep maroon spathes and a dark, upright spadix. Ideal for bold, exotic planting in shaded or semi-shaded schemes.

Description

Dracunculus vulgaris, commonly known as the Dragon Arum or Voodoo Lily, is a striking and exotic plant that commands attention in any landscape. It features a large, velvety, maroon spathe wrapped around a long, near-black central spadix, giving it a bold, almost otherworldly appearance. Eye catching foliage appears early, followed by the flowers in summer.  In autumn, the plant will die back completely, so mark positions to avoid any disturbances.

This arum thrives when planted shallowly in humus-rich, well-drained soils.  This bloom prefers a sheltered spot in partial to full shade—ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and feature beds in historic or exotic-themed planting designs. Dracunculus vulgaris also serves well in shaded courtyards, under mature tree canopies, botanical gardens or educational collections.  While its scent during flowering can be strong (to attract pollinators), its visual appeal is unmatched for dramatic effect.  Do not plant too close to seating areas as the scent is very strong during bloom.
