Crocus tom. Barrs Purple

Crocus tom. Barrs Purple

Free-flowering purple crocus with graceful petals. Superb for naturalising under trees or along spring bulb meadows.

Description

Crocus tommasinianus Barrs Purple is a much-loved early-spring crocus with rich, violet-purple blooms that open wide on sunny days. Flowering from mid-February, it is one of the best cultivars for naturalising in Irish grass, woodland clearings, and urban green spaces, where its ability to multiply by seed and offset creates long-lasting carpets. It thrives in light shade and moisture-retentive soils that drain freely in winter. Barrs Purple is especially effective when interplanted with Galanthus nivalis, Scilla bifolia, or early Narcissus Tete-a-Tete to stagger bloom and maximise early forage. A favourite of bees, landscapers, and local authorities seeking low-input spring colour that spreads.
