Description
Crocus chrysanthus Fuscotinctus stands out with deep golden petals richly marked in mahogany-brown feathering, giving each flower a painterly effect. Emerging in February, it brings dramatic colour contrast to rockeries, meadow lawns, or between stepping stones in informal paths. Well suited to free-draining soils and sunny positions, it performs well across Ireland’s varied regions, provided winter wet is controlled.
This crocus creates bold combinations when paired with the electric blues of Iris reticulata Harmony or Scilla siberica Spring Beauty. It also adds visual texture beneath deciduous hedging when mingled with early Narcissus cyclamineus forms or Eranthis for a layered, succession-based display.
