Description
Greigii Tulip Willem van den Akker is a compact early tulip for planting where a neat red-and-white flower is required with more character than a plain dwarf variety. Its value is in the combination of bright colour, low growth, strong outline and foliage detail. The flowers are red with a white edge, carried above foliage that shows the subtle brown-striped pattern associated with Greigii hybrids. V
Willem van den Akker is best used where the red-and-white contrast can be read clearly. It suits courtyard containers, raised planters, hotel entrance beds, estate path edges, public garden fronts, civic beds, school grounds and compact commercial landscapes. The lower height makes it more useful near the front of a scheme than behind taller narcissus or later tulips.
This variety works well with blue muscari, white narcissus, low yellow tulips, early crocus, compact Greigii tulips and simple spring bedding. It can be planted in repeated groups for a crisp early colour rhythm, or used in containers where the white petal edge and patterned foliage can be appreciated close up.
