Tulip Pink Star

Tulip Pink Star

A lush Late Double Tulip with full, peony-like blooms in rich pink tones, thriving in late spring borders, beds, and containers.

Description

Tulip Pink Star is a Late Double Tulip, often called a “peony-flowering tulip” because of it multi-layered petals that resemble a rose or peony in full bloom. Its flowers are full and rounded, composed of densely packed petals in a glowing shade of rosy-pink that softens towards the edges into silvery pastel tones as the bloom matures. At times, warmer undertones of blush or cream can appear at the petal base, adding richness and variation within a single planting. Blooming in late spring, this tulip provides a sumptuous finale to the tulip season, extending colour when most earlier varieties have faded.

Standing on sturdy stems around 25-35 cm, Pink Star is surprisingly weather-tolerant for a double form, with strong resilience to rain and wind in Irish conditions. The large, layered blooms last well into May, making it an excellent choice for gardeners and designers seeking dependable late-season structure and showiness. Its luxurious peony-like form gives exceptional impact both in public beds and private gardens, and when planted en masse, it creates a lavish sweep of soft pink that can transform civic plantings, borders, or feature displays.

Pink Star thrives in free-draining, fertile soils in a sunny or lightly dappled position. Planting is best in October to November, allowing bulbs to establish ahead of winter, and ensuring strong, upright stems the following spring. From a biodiversity perspective, double tulips are less accessible to pollinators due to their dense petals, so Pink Star is best paired with pollinator-friendly companions such as Narcissus Actaea, Muscari armeniacum, or Allium Purple Sensation, which provide essential nectar and pollen at the same time.

In terms of design, Pink Star is perfect for formal spring borders, rose gardens, and urban landscaping, where its romantic colouring brings softness and sophistication. It is also an outstanding variety for containers, where its densely layered blooms can be appreciated up close. Pair it with whites such as Tulip Maureen for crisp contrast, deep tones like Queen of Night for drama, or late-season Camassia for layered, textural plantings.

For gardeners, landscapers, and designers in Ireland, Pink Star is a lavish, late-season tulip that ensures borders remain vibrant well into the close of spring.
