Description
Camassia quamash is a more compact camassia that brings rich blue spring colour to meadows, naturalistic borders and moisture retentive grassland planting. It is particularly useful where a lower camassia effect is wanted, either because the site is smaller or because a more relaxed and less vertical planting rhythm is preferred. The flowers are attractive to pollinators and contribute to biodiversity focused landscape design while still giving a clear ornamental effect. In Irish conditions it is especially suitable for orchard margins, informal estate planting and public schemes that aim for a naturalised look rather than a formal bedding style. Because it is lower and more relaxed than the larger leichtlinii forms, it works well in the foreground of mixed bulb drifts and can help transition between early bulbs and later perennial planting.
