Description
Fosteriana Tulip Rigas Barikades is a compact feature tulip for planting where a standard early tulip would feel too plain. Its value is not just in the flower colour, but in the whole plant: short stature, marked foliage, narrow petals and an unusual twisted outline. The flowers are bright orange-red, with long, narrow petals that curve and twist outwards at the tips.
Rigas Barikades is best used in close-view positions where the foliage and flower shape can be noticed. It suits courtyard containers, raised planters, estate border fronts, public garden edges, civic beds, hotel entrances, rock garden style planting and smaller commercial landscape features. Its lower height makes it useful near paths, seating areas and entrances, rather than at the back of larger tulip displays.
Rigas Barikades gives a sharper, more sculptural effect than a conventional orange tulip. It is a good option when the planting calls for something distinctive but still suitable for formal autumn bulb planting.
It combines well with blue muscari, low white narcissus, cream tulips, early species tulips, dark purple tulips and simple foliage planting. In larger schemes, use it in repeated groups rather than isolated bulbs, so the orange-red flowers and striped leaves read clearly as one deliberate feature.
