Tulip Red Foxtrot

Tulip Red Foxtrot

A compact Double Early tulip with crimson-red, peony-like blooms, perfect for early spring containers, bedding, and cut flowers.

Description

Tulip Red Foxtrot is a lush and luxurious Double Early tulip, valued for its densely layered, peony-like blooms that bring both richness and texture to early spring plantings. Its flowers are a glowing scarlet to crimson-red, with petals packed tightly to form rounded, rose-like heads. As the blooms open, the layers catch and reflect the light, giving them depth and vibrancy that ensures they stand out even when planted among other early-season bulbs.

At a compact 25–35 cm tall, Red Foxtrot is perfectly suited for containers, low borders, and formal bedding schemes, where its opulent blooms can be appreciated up close. Flowering in March through April, it provides reliable early colour, often appearing alongside dwarf narcissi, muscari, and other botanical tulips. Its short but sturdy stems make it particularly well adapted to Irish coastal and windy gardens, holding heavy flowers upright despite rain and Atlantic breezes.

While its fully double flowers are less accessible to pollinators, Red Foxtrot can be partnered with open, pollinator-friendly bulbs such as Scilla siberica, Chionodoxa forbesii, or Narcissus Tête-à-Tête to support biodiversity while delivering ornamental impact.

For planting design, Red Foxtrot is best used in clusters or bold drifts, where its glowing red blooms form carpets of early-season luxury. In containers, it makes a superb focal point on patios or at entrances, delivering a sense of abundance at a time when many gardens are still waking from winter. It also excels as a cut flower, with its rose-like fullness and long-lasting vase life making it a florist’s favourite for spring arrangements.

Plant bulbs in autumn in fertile, well-draining soil. While full sun produces the most intense red tones, it will tolerate light shade, especially in sheltered Irish gardens.
