Description
Tulip Queen of Night is one of the most iconic Single Late tulips, famous for its near-black colouring that adds sophistication and drama to spring displays. Its deep maroon-black petals glow with hints of plum in sunlight, creating a velvety richness unlike any other tulip. Blooming in May, it closes the tulip season with a flourish, pairing effortlessly with almost every other tulip colour.
Growing to 55–65 cm tall, Queen of Night is strong and resilient in Irish gardens, with thick stems that withstand wind and rain. Its classic goblet-shaped blooms are highly prized by designers and landscapers for creating bold contrast in formal beds, mixed borders, and urban landscapes. Though not strongly scented, its open cup form provides modest pollen access, though its biodiversity value is limited compared to simpler species tulips.
Design-wise, Queen of Night is unmatched. It creates stunning combinations with whites such as Maureen or Purissima, soft apricots like Menton, or fiery tones such as Ballerina or Orange Emperor. For added seasonal layering, it works beautifully alongside perennials such as alliums or camassias, extending the visual impact into early summer. It is also a superb cut flower, valued for its elegance and long vase life.
