Tulip Qatar

Tulip Qatar

A Fringed Double Tulip with scarlet-red petals edged in frosted white. Luxurious, dramatic, and perfect for late-spring Irish gardens.

Description

Tulip Qatar is a show-stopping Fringed Double Tulip, instantly recognisable for its rich, deep scarlet-red blooms edged with a frosted white fringe. The densely layered petals give the flowers a luxurious, peony-like form, while the finely serrated edges catch the light, adding sparkle and texture to each bloom. The contrast between the velvety scarlet petals and their icy-white fringe makes this tulip appear as though it has been dusted with frost, bringing both drama and elegance to late-spring displays.

Reaching 40–50 cm tall, Qatar flowers in May, extending the tulip season with its bold and theatrical blooms. The stems are strong and upright, easily holding the heavy double flowers against Ireland’s wind and showers. As with many double forms, its biodiversity value is limited, but planting alongside pollinator-rich companions such as Muscari armeniacum, Allium Purple Sensation, or Camassia leichtlinii caerulea can balance ecological value with visual impact.

In the garden, Qatar is best used in drifts or clumps, where its fiery colouring and frosted edging create a striking carpet of late-spring colour. It is particularly effective in formal bedding schemes, cottage-style borders, and container displays, where its dramatic flowers can be admired up close. The combination of red and white also makes it an ideal choice for celebratory or themed plantings in public landscapes.

As a cut flower, Qatar is exceptional. The double, fringed petals bring both texture and richness to arrangements, while its scarlet-and-white colouring adds vibrancy and contrast. With good vase life, it is well suited for use by florists in spring weddings or bold seasonal displays.

Plant bulbs in autumn, 10–12 cm deep, in fertile, free-draining soil. A position in full sun will bring out the intensity of its red colouring, while the frosted edge gleams brightest in clear spring light. For maximum design effect, pair it with soft whites like Tulip Maureen, deep purples such as Queen of Night, or the silvery-pink tones of Pink Star.
