Description
Species Tulip Persian Pearl is a compact botanical tulip for planting where strong colour and fine detail are needed in a low-growing form. It is a small tulip, but not a quiet one. The combination of purple-pink petals and a golden centre gives it a sharp, gem-like effect when the flowers open in spring sunshine. The flowers are bright pinkish-purple, starting bowl-shaped before opening into stars that reveal a clear yellow eye.
Persian Pearl is best used where visitors can view the flowers from close range or slightly above. It suits raised planters, courtyard containers, gravel borders, public garden collections, estate path edges, hotel garden details, alpine-style beds and compact commercial landscapes. Its small height makes it unsuitable for the back of larger beds, but valuable at the front of designed spring planting.
Use Persian Pearl with blue muscari, early crocus, low narcissus, white species tulips, pale yellow botanical tulips, fine grasses and gravel-style planting. It works best in repeated groups, where the purple-pink flowers and golden centres create a clear early spring feature without losing their individual botanical detail. Persian Pearl has a more intense colour than other, softer botanical tulips such as Honky Tonk or Polychroma.
Species tulips such as Persian Pearl can multiply when well-sited, with suppliers noting naturalising or perennialising potential in suitable free-draining positions.
