Description
Tulip Jimmy is a lively and spirited Triumph tulip whose colouring brings instant warmth to mid-spring plantings. Each bloom opens in a rich, sunlit orange, with petals dramatically edged and feathered in scarlet red, giving a painterly, flame-like effect. At the heart of the flower lies a warm yellow base that intensifies the inner glow when sunlight passes through. This interplay of fiery tones makes Jimmy a natural focal point in beds, borders, and container groupings.
Growing to 35–40 cm, it is proportioned for both municipal planting and private garden use, with stems sturdy enough to handle Ireland’s often unsettled spring weather — from blustery Atlantic winds to cold, damp spells — without toppling or bruising. While its classic tulip form offers limited nectar to pollinators, biodiversity can be supported by underplanting with forage-rich bulbs such as Muscari armeniacum, Anemone blanda, or Chionodoxa luciliae, ensuring bees and hoverflies have a food source in the same planting scheme.
Jimmy thrives in full sun and moderately fertile, free-draining soil, though it will still flower well in light shade, especially in more exposed coastal gardens. In heavy Irish soils, the addition of grit or sand at planting helps prevent winter waterlogging. It performs beautifully in avenue plantings, drifts along garden paths, and bold massed blocks in public spaces. The vibrant warm tones also pair well with deep purples like Tulip Queen of Night or creamy whites such as Tulip Maureen for striking contrast.
