Description
Tulip Green Spirit is a refined Viridiflora tulip, distinguished by its creamy-white petals boldly flamed with fresh green streaks. The long-lasting blooms carry a subtle elegance, with their painterly brushstrokes of green adding freshness and contrast to the soft ivory tones. Flowering in late spring (May), Green Spirit is a superb season-extender, keeping tulip displays alive long after many other varieties have faded. Reaching 45-55 cm tall, this variety is built for strength and reliability, with sturdy stems that withstand Ireland’s spring winds and showers. The thick petals of Viridiflora tulips ensure excellent durability, meaning Green Spirit holds its shape and colour for weeks outdoors and performs exceptionally well as a cut flower, with long vase life and striking bicolour appeal. While fragrance is faint, its simple cup form offers some accessibility for pollinators, giving it modest biodiversity value. To enhance ecological benefit, it can be planted with nectar-rich companions like Allium Purple Sensation, Camassia leichtlinii caerulea, or Muscari armeniacum, which bloom at the same time and extend forage opportunities for bees. Design-wise, Green Spirit is wonderfully versatile. Its clean, crisp colour palette works seamlessly in contemporary gardens, formal landscapes, or naturalistic plantings. It pairs superbly with deep tones like Queen of Night or Paul Scherer for dramatic contrast, soft pastels such as Menton for elegance, or other Viridiflora tulips like Groenland for harmony. Plant in drifts for landscape scale impact or in containers and mixed borders where its unusual green markings can be admired up close. Bulbs should be planted in autumn in fertile, free-draining soils. A position in full sun will maximise both colour intensity and bloom longevity.
