Description
Tulip Fancy Frills is a dazzling fringed tulip cultivar that delivers refined drama to spring plantings with its intricately ruffled petal edges and soft pastel palette. Each bloom opens to reveal creamy white petals brushed with delicate rose-pink tones and finished with a finely serrated, almost crystalline fringe — giving the impression of sugar-dusted blossoms. This variety flowers in mid to late spring and reaches a height of 40–45 cm, making it ideal for layering above lower spring perennials or contrasting compact tulip groups.
In Irish conditions, Fancy Frills thrives in fertile, well-drained soils in full sun or very light shade. It performs exceptionally in structured civic bedding schemes, council-maintained parks, and long-view planting where the frilled form offers exceptional textural interest. It’s also an ideal pick for high-end container displays in hotel grounds, wedding venues, or curated front-of-house planting schemes.
Though highly ornamental and less accessible to bees than simple-petalled varieties, its use can be ecologically balanced by pairing with open, nectar-rich bulbs such as Muscari armeniacum, Anemone blanda, or Crocus Ruby Giant. Combine with Tulip Negrita, white daffodils, like Hakuun, or late hyacinths for a bold pastel-meets-contrast effect.
