Description
Tulip Darwin Hybrid Mix is a vibrant, high-performance selection of top-grade Darwin hybrid cultivars, selected in bulb size or superior flower strength and uniformity. This mix provides a bold colour spectrum, typically including classic reds, oranges, pinks, and yellows, with large, goblet-shaped blooms up to 10 cm wide. Flowering throughout April, these tulips stand between 50 and 60 cm tall, making them ideal for impactful, large-scale displays.
This robust strain thrives in full sun and deep, fertile, free-draining soils across Ireland. It excels in civic planting schemes, roadside verges, council-maintained displays, and estate gardens where resilience, height, and colour intensity are needed. Darwin hybrids are well known for their perennial tendency under the right conditions, especially in well-drained soil that dries fully in summer.
This mix is especially suited to mechanically planted bulb drifts in parks and public open spaces, high-footfall commercial sites requiring midseason colour, perennialising schemes beneath deciduous trees or between shrubs and structured planting around civic buildings and institutional landscapes
While not highly fragrant, Darwin hybrids are moderate contributors to biodiversity. Their wide-open forms in sun allow limited access to early bees and hoverflies, and they form a valuable visual cue in pollinator-optimised designs.
Recommended companions include Muscari armeniacum, Hyacinth Carnegie, and Allium Purple Sensation, and underplantings, of Muscari White Magic.
