Description
Tulip Crystal Star is a glowing fringed tulip, prized by professional gardeners and designers for its vivid lemon-yellow colour and fine crystalline petal edges that sparkle in morning light. Blooming in late April to early May, it grows to a tidy yet striking 45–50 cm, offering both height and texture in formal schemes and mixed seasonal beds.
This cultivar thrives in full sun, in light to moderately fertile, free-draining soils. It performs especially well in urban borders, public seasonal beds, and coastal gardens, where strong light and good drainage allow the fringe to fully develop without weather damage. In wetter areas or heavy soils, improve drainage with sand or grit, and consider raised beds for best results.
Crystal Star is ideal for civic spring bedding schemes with bold colour palettes, high-visibility event plantings in commercial or public spaces, layered yellow plantings in memorial or institutional settings or fringed tulip collections in private cutting gardens. Undersow with Muscari armeniacum for a layered look.
Its intense yellow hue and distinctive edge make it a natural pairing with other fringed cultivars such as Tulip Cummins or Curly Sue, or contrast brilliantly with deep purple Triumph tulips like Negrita or Crown of Negrita.
Although not fragrant, its open flower form and mid-spring bloom time offer moderate pollen access for hoverflies and short-tongued bees, particularly in sunlit urban plantings.
