Description
Tulip clusiana Mix is a curated blend of heritage species tulips, including forms such as Cynthia, Peppermintstick, and chrysantha cultivars, designed for dryland biodiversity planting, re-wilding projects, and naturalistic design schemes. Each cultivar blooms in early spring — March through mid-April — with star-shaped flowers that open wide in sunlight and close at dusk or in overcast weather, mirroring natural phototropism.
This mix thrives in full sun, in freely draining, nutrient-poor soils, such as chalky banks, gravel beds, wildflower lawns, or scree gardens. It is highly tolerant of drought once established and requires no supplementary feeding, making it ideal for eco-sensitive developments, urban green infrastructure, and no-irrigation planting designs.
Each variety contributes a slightly different visual note — from red-edged white, to yellow-over-red, to rosy-pink blushed forms — offering variation within a unified ecological planting framework. The effect is particularly strong when interplanted with low spring ephemerals, such as Chionodoxa, Crocus tommasinianus, and Fritillaria meleagris.
Clusiana types are among the only tulips that consistently attract and support early pollinators, particularly solitary bees, hairy-footed flower bees, and hoverflies, making this mix ideal for pollinator corridors, orchard systems, and low-chemical public planting schemes.
