Description
Tulip Bastia is a flamboyant double early tulip with densely layered blooms in deep purple-maroon heavily edged with golden yellow. Each flower resembles a miniature peony, with tight, ruffled petals and dramatic colour contrast. Flowering in early to mid-spring (late March to early April), it grows to 30–35 cm and is ideal for high-impact colour at the start of the season.
This variety excels in formal planters, estate borders, city containers, or high-footfall entrances where bold, low-growing impact is required. It thrives in full sun in fertile, well-drained loam or compost. In wetter soils, elevate beds slightly or use containers for best results.
Pair with bright mid-height tulips like Golden Apeldoon or underplant with Muscari or dwarf Narcissus Tête-à-Tête for tiered effect. Bastia is showy and eye-catching, making it perfect for retail garden centres, early-season displays, or dramatic front-of-border design.
Not strongly scented but open enough for early foraging insects, it provides moderate biodiversity support when integrated into layered schemes. Great for early-season colour in residential or civic planting. For best results, plant at 10–12 cm depth and space 10 cm apart.
