Tulip Apeldoorn’s Elite

Tulip Apeldoorn’s Elite

A bold red and yellow bicolour tulip ideal for public beds, civic displays, and strong spring colour drifts.

Description

Tulip Apeldoorn’s Elite is a vigorous Darwin Hybrid cultivar with striking bicolour flowers — glowing red-orange petals streaked with broad golden-yellow flames. This mid-spring bloomer reaches an impressive 55–65 cm and is known for its robust performance, long-lasting blooms, and suitability to both prestige projects and landscape-scale public schemes. Like its namesake Apeldoorn, this cultivar is built for resilience, thriving across Ireland in exposed and high-footfall planting areas.

Its bold colouring makes it an outstanding choice for civic beds, roadside verges, roundabouts, and commercial park designs. It performs best in full sun in neutral to slightly acidic loam, with good drainage. Avoid heavy shade or sodden ground — amend poorly draining areas with sand or horticultural grit for reliable returns.

Visually impactful in drifts of 50+, it partners perfectly with daffodils like Narcissus Red Devon, Muscari armeniacum, or Tulip Golden Oxford. For added longevity and ecological function, interplant with low nectar-rich perennials like wild primroses. Apeldoorn’s Elite is moderately pollinator-friendly — though not highly nectar-rich, it offers landing access and visual cues for queen bees and hoverflies.

The tall stems and brilliant bicolour make it a favourite for commercial cut flower growers and council-managed floristry schemes. For professional landscape use, plant in generous drifts with 12 cm spacing.
