Tulip Apeldoorn 11/12

Tulip Apeldoorn 11/12

A robust Darwin Hybrid with bold red blooms for civic beds, road medians, and high-visibility planting schemes.

Description

Tulip Apeldoorn is a cornerstone of large-scale spring plantings, known for its uniform, bold red blooms and unmatched structural clarity. A true Darwin Hybrid, it grows to 50–60 cm and flowers mid-spring (April), with giant goblet-shaped flowers held on thick, storm-resistant stems. This flower delivers high uniformity and excellent cost-efficiency for public, civic, or institutional plantings across Ireland.

It excels in open landscapes — council beds, roundabouts, hotel grounds, school campuses, and housing developments — where scale, visibility, and durability are key. Apeldoorn thrives in rich, well-drained soils with full sun exposure, preferring slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Avoid compacted soils; incorporate compost or sand when planting in clay-heavy areas.

Mass planting is where this tulip shines. Use 75–100 bulbs per m² for carpets of uniform colour. Interplant with contrasting large-scale cultivars like Tulip Golden Apeldoorn or Light and Dreamy for layered spring rhythm. Combine with sturdy daffodils like Narcissus Carlton or naturalising Muscari for tiered pollinator benefit.

Though only lightly fragrant, the open structure of the flower provides decent nectar access for large-bodied pollinators such as queen bumblebees and late-flying solitary bees. When included in multi-species beds, it contributes valuable vertical colour without compromising biodiversity schemes.

This bulb is well suited for efficient mechanical planting — beds, verges, or civic containers — where planting speed and flower uniformity are essential.
