Ornithogalum nutans

Ornithogalum nutans

Elegant silver-white nodding flowers with green backs. Shade-tolerant and ideal for naturalising beneath trees and in spring woodland schemes.

Description

Ornithogalum nutans, or the Nodding Star-of-Bethlehem, produces graceful, arching stems of bell-shaped silver-white flowers with a soft green reverse. A standout for woodland-style planting, this species excels in partial shade and moist, fertile soil — thriving under deciduous trees, along hedgerows, or in informal spring borders.

Its soft tones and delicate structure lend themselves to naturalistic planting, and the bulbs multiply gradually with little maintenance. Highly suited to Irish conditions, where cool, damp spring soils promote strong early growth.

Perfect alongside Anemone nemorosa, Leucojum vernum, or Hyacinthoides non-scripta.
