Description
Narcissus Standard Value is a classic, large-flowered daffodil cultivar known for its timeless golden-yellow colouration, upright habit, and dependable mass performance. Each bloom features broad, sunlit-yellow petals surrounding a bold, cylindrical trumpet in a slightly deeper shade — creating a harmonious, monochromatic effect that delivers a strong visual punch in traditional and municipal plantings. Blooming in early to mid-spring, it reaches 35–45 cm tall and boasts sturdy stems and excellent weather tolerance, even in exposed Irish coastal or roadside sites.
Standard Value excels in civic verges, embankments, roundabouts, and mixed bulb lawns where high visibility and perennial impact are essential. It performs best in full sun but is also tolerant of light shade and heavier soils, provided drainage is reasonable. Once established, it naturalises readily and multiplies into vibrant swathes that require minimal upkeep. Ideal for council budgets or estate-scale spring displays. Its open trumpet form provides pollen and nectar access to early-emerging pollinators such as honeybees and bumblebee queens, supporting seasonal biodiversity efforts.
Pair with blue Anemone blanda, Muscari armeniacum, or early red tulips such as single Red Paradise or double Abba for contrast, or mass in large drifts for a classic, monocultural effect. Suitable for churchyards, village approach roads, woodland fringes, and school gardens aiming for cheerful, robust spring colour with ecological value.
