Narcissus Golden Bells

Narcissus Golden Bells

Miniature golden hoop-petticoat daffodil. Ideal for rockeries, troughs, and early pollinator planting.

Description

Narcissus Golden Bells is a botanical-style, miniature hoop petticoat daffodil, prized for its distinctive flared trumpet and delicate scale. Each flower features a disproportionately large, bell-shaped golden-yellow corona that extends like a funnel from a fine, thread-like base, with minimal petals flaring behind it. Its unique form lends a wild alpine charm to early-season planting and adds sculptural texture to gravel gardens, troughs, and miniature bulb displays.

Flowering early to mid-spring at just 15–20 cm tall, ‘Golden Bells’ thrives in sunny, free-draining conditions and is particularly well-suited to rockeries, alpine frames, green roofs, scree beds, and terraced beds where sharp drainage is ensured. In Irish gardens, it performs best in coastal, upland, or raised installations where excess moisture drains away freely, helping to replicate the mountainous conditions of its ancestral habitat.

Despite its fine stature, Golden Bells makes a strong seasonal impression when planted en masse or clustered in pockets between stones or emerging perennials. Its trumpet form is broad and open, offering easy nectar access for early-flying solitary bees, hoverflies, and bee-flies — many of which rely on low-growing bulbs during early-season forage scarcity. This makes it a valuable component of biodiversity-focused designs, especially where space is limited or low-height pollinator layers are needed.

Plant alongside early Crocus, Scilla siberica, or Iris reticulata for a detailed alpine-style spring tapestry that supports insect activity and extends seasonal interest. Ideal for specialist collections, climate-resilient planting, or naturalised low-input schemes that still demand distinct visual character.
