Narcissus Actaea 14/16

Narcissus Actaea 14/16

A fragrant poeticus-type daffodil with white petals and a red-rimmed yellow eye. Great for naturalising in Irish meadows and under trees.

Description

Narcissus Actaea is one of the most celebrated poeticus daffodils, prized for its fragrant white flowers, reflexed petals, and a small, vivid yellow eye ringed with crimson. Blooming later than most other daffodils — usually from mid-April into May — it offers a graceful and naturalistic look that suits wildflower meadows, orchard edges, and under deciduous trees in Irish gardens. Its height of 40–45 cm allows it to sit comfortably within long grass or planted in loose drifts among perennials.

Highly recommended for naturalising schemes, Actaea thrives in sun or partial shade and prefers moist, humus-rich but well-drained soil, especially in lightly wooded or sheltered sites. Once established, the bulbs can be left undisturbed and will slowly multiply, creating expanding colonies that flower more richly each year. Its sweet fragrance adds a sensory layer to the spring garden, while its open, accessible flower form makes it invaluable to bees, especially in gardens aiming to support biodiversity.

Pair it with Fritillaria meleagris, Camassia leichtlinii, or Anemone nemorosa for a true woodland effect. Actaea is often used in heritage planting projects, churchyards, and pollinator-rich landscapes, where its understated elegance and ecological function align perfectly.
