Lilium regale

Lilium regale

Tall, elegant and powerfully fragrant, Lilium regale produces trumpet-shaped white blooms with golden throats. Perfect for classic and large-scale perennial schemes.

Description

The show-stopping Lilium regale is famed for its majestic, trumpet-shaped white blooms flushed with a blush of purple-pink on the reverse and glowing golden throats. Towering to 120–150 cm in height and blooming from late June through July, this lily brings height, fragrance, and drama to borders, wall sides, and formal garden layouts. Each stem can carry upwards of a dozen strongly scented flowers, and its sweet perfume intensifies at dusk, making it ideal for evening gardens or planting near patios.

Lilium regale prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, fertile soil. It is particularly suited to southerly-facing walls or protected courtyards, where its height can be used to punctuate formal planting or break up looser herbaceous schemes. In Irish gardens, it benefits from a sheltered position to avoid wind damage to its tall stems.

This lily is highly attractive to pollinators, especially bees and moths, due to its wide, open trumpet and abundant pollen. It is also known to draw in night-flying insects, adding ecological interest beyond daylight hours.

Companion bulbs for Lilium regale include Allium Globemaster , Tulip China Pink or Maureen, Fritillaria persica Ivory Bells or Camassia cusickii all of which complement its stately white trumpets with varying textures, bloom times, and heights, creating layered interest and enhancing pollinator activity in early to midsummer planting schemes.

Lilium regale is a legacy plant — once established, it becomes a reliable anchor in any traditional or pollinator-friendly garden design.
