Description
Dahlia Akita is a proper feature dahlia, valued for big, high impact flowers in warm sunset shades that suit late summer planting schemes. Irish horticulturists often use this colour range to lift mixed borders when earlier perennials fade, or to bring warmth into civic and commercial planting where bold colour needs to read from a distance. In private gardens it is commonly planted near patios and paths so the flower detail is appreciated up close, and it performs well in large containers where it can be kept evenly watered and fed. Akita is also useful as a cut flower, with strong stems that suit informal bouquets and autumn toned arrangements. In planting design it pairs well with salvias, echinacea, rudbeckia and ornamental grasses for a long season display that still looks intentional in September. Pollinators such as butterflies are frequently drawn to this variety, enhancing biodiversity and supporting local ecosystems throughout the growing season. Plant the tuber after frost risk has passed, in full sun and fertile, free draining soil improved with compost. Water to establish and keep moisture steady through summer. Pinch early tips for branching, stake if exposed, deadhead regularly and feed from bud stage onwards. Lift and store tubers frost free after the first frosts for repeat performance.
