Description
Dahlia Wittem is prized for a clean, elegant look and a manageable habit. It is a decorative dahlia that typically sits in the dwarf to medium range at about 50 to 60cm, making it a practical choice for the front to mid border and for container programmes where height needs to stay controlled. The flowers are the main selling point. Blooms are full, round and peony like, reading as crisp pure white at a glance, but often showing subtle highlights in lavender, lilac or light pink through the petals. The centre can carry a slightly purple or creamy tone, which adds depth without losing the overall white effect. This refined colouring suits Irish landscapers and horticulturists planting larger areas where a consistent white can link different colour zones and lift planting in dull weather. Since it flowers for a long window through summer and autumn, Wittem works well as a repeating unit in borders, formal beds, and in large containers for entrances and terraces. It cuts well for clean arrangements, and regular deadheading keeps the plant producing fresh blooms for weeks. Since it is a fuller decorative form, pollinator access can be more limited than single dahlias. If biodiversity is a priority, pair it with nearby nectar rich, open flowered plants such as salvia, verbena or nepeta. Plant after frost risk has passed in full sun and fertile, free draining soil improved with compost. Keep moisture steady, feed from bud stage onwards, and deadhead regularly to maintain continuous flowering. Lift and store tubers frost free after the first frosts for reliable replanting.
