Description
Dahlia Mystery Day is an easily grown classic summer bloomer that flowers from July until the first frost. It is a large, double dinnerplate with dark red, almost burgundy, velvety flowers tipped in white. This graphic two tone look is widely used by Irish horticulturists in civic beds and estate borders because it reads as deliberate planting even from a distance. In home gardens it suits front borders and patio containers where the colour detail can be appreciated up close. The deep red colour anchors mixed planting and pairs well with whites, silvers and pale grasses, while the white tipping helps the blooms stand out against foliage in duller weather. It also makes a strong cut flower for dramatic bouquets, and regular cutting helps maintain repeat flowering. Plant after frost risk in full sun and fertile, free draining soil improved with compost. Water evenly, stake if exposed, feed from bud stage onwards and deadhead frequently to keep new buds forming. Lift and store tubers frost free after the first frosts.
