Description
Dahlia Bohemian Spartacus is a bold statement variety, selected for big flowers in deep red shades, often with richer darker tones through the petals that give a velvety, dramatic finish and some streaks of yellow. Irish horticulturists use this type as an anchor colour in late summer borders, especially alongside pale grasses and lighter perennials where the red reads strongly and gives definition to a scheme. It is also useful in civic planting where a saturated colour block needs to hold from a distance. In private gardens it works well near patios and front borders, and it is excellent for cutting, producing striking stems for rich bouquets. Pair it with white cosmos, pale echinacea, silver foliage and ornamental grasses for contrast, or combine with oranges and bronzes for a hot late season palette. Plant after frost risk in full sun and free draining soil improved with compost. Keep moisture steady, support if exposed, deadhead regularly and feed from bud stage onwards to keep flowering continuous. Lift and store tubers frost free after the first frosts.
