Description
Crocus tommasinianus Barr’s Purple is a much-loved early-spring crocus with rich, violet-purple blooms that open wide on sunny days. Flowering from mid-February, it’s one of the best cultivars for naturalising in Irish grass, woodland clearings, and urban green spaces, where its ability to multiply by seed and offset creates long-lasting carpets.
It thrives in light shade and moisture-retentive soils that drain freely in winter. Barr’s Purple is especially effective when interplanted with Galanthus nivalis, Scilla bifolia, or early Narcissus Tête-à-Tête to stagger bloom and maximise early forage. A favourite of bees, landscapers, and local authorities seeking low-input spring colour that spreads organically.
