Description
Camassia quamash, also known as Small Camas, is a more compact species compared to other Camassias, typically reaching 40–60 cm in height. It produces slender spikes of rich indigo-blue, star-like flowers in May, and is especially well-suited to smaller gardens, wildflower areas, or naturalising in moist, humus-rich soil.
Native to North America, where it has cultural and ecological importance, Camassia quamash adapts very well to Irish conditions. It performs in partial shade or sun, and even tolerating heavier soils if well-drained. Its modest stature makes it ideal for planting through mixed meadow borders alongside Alliums such as moly.
It is particularly attractive to bees and provides important early nectar. A low-maintenance perennial bulb that returns reliably each year.
