Description
Anemone Lord Lieutenant is a bold and very showy spring-flowering anemone, valued for its fully double flowers in deep violet-blue to purple shades surrounding a dark centre. The blooms have a layered, almost ruffled appearance that gives them real impact in the garden and makes them especially attractive in patio pots, raised beds and front-of-border planting. This variety works well in sunny, sheltered spots with free-draining soil and is also suitable for containers where its vivid colouring can be appreciated up close. It is a useful cut flower, bringing strong colour indoors early in the season.
The open-centred ancestry of Anemone coronaria makes it of interest to pollinators when accessible, though double forms are generally less useful than single-flowered types. In mild areas and well-drained soil it can return well, though it is better treated as only lightly perennial rather than fully reliable for naturalising in all locations. Ideal for gardeners looking for something bright, dramatic and compact for spring displays.
