Description
Allium neapolitanum offers a lighter, more elegant allium look, with airy clusters of small white flowers that lift planting schemes without overpowering them. It works well in mixed borders where customers want a clean, fresh transition from spring bulbs into early summer perennials, and it is also excellent in containers, gravel gardens and Mediterranean style planting where white flowers brighten the palette.
The flowers appear on slender stems above neat green foliage, making it easy to weave through other plants. It pairs well with early salvias, hardy geraniums, lavender, nepeta, euphorbia and ornamental grasses. In pollinator aware gardens it also contributes useful forage during late spring.
Plant bulbs in autumn for best performance. Choose a sunny position and soil that drains freely. In heavier Irish soils, improve drainage with grit or plant into raised beds. Once established it is low fuss. After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally so the bulbs can recharge. Over time it can multiply into small colonies, giving customers a naturalised drift effect.
