Tulip Mariette 11/12

Tulip Mariette 11/12

Elegant pink lily-flowered tulip with flared petals, late-blooming, ideal for Irish borders, cut flowers, and extended seasonal displays.

Description

Tulip Mariette is among the most elegant of all lily-flowered tulips, renowned for its tall, graceful form and delicately pointed petals. Each bloom is a refined shade of rose-pink that matures into a richer raspberry tone, with a silvery sheen that shimmers in sunlight. As the petals arch and flare outward, they give the impression of movement, catching light and breeze in ways that bring refinement and poise to mid- and late-spring plantings. Unlike shorter, blocky tulips, Mariette stands out for its sophisticated silhouette, lending height and architectural finesse to schemes.

This lily-flowered beauty flowers in May, extending the tulip season when many earlier cultivars have already finished, making it particularly valuable in Irish gardens where continuity of colour is prized. Reaching up to 60 cm, it holds tall and firm on elegant stems that are surprisingly resistant to wind and rain, allowing it to perform well in both coastal and inland sites. It thrives in fertile, free-draining soil in sunny positions, and with correct siting will return for several years if left undisturbed.

In design, Mariette pairs magnificently with darker tulips such as Queen of Night, whose moody tones enhance its bright rose hues, or with pale, fragrant narcissi like Thalia for a classic white-and-pink contrast. For naturalistic or meadow-edge planting, it combines well with Camassia leichtlinii caerulea, their starry blue flowers rising as the tulips mature, creating a sophisticated layered look. It is also highly regarded as a cut flower, with its long stems and flared petals giving florists a material of exceptional elegance.

Although not notably scented, Mariette contributes to biodiversity by extending nectar and pollen availability into late spring. Its open form allows access for bees on sunny days, particularly when planted in warm, sheltered spots. As such, it is a valuable part of pollinator-conscious schemes, particularly in urban plantings where forage is limited. Its reliability, height, and style make it suitable for municipal displays, formal gardens, and modern landscape projects, while in private gardens it adds an air of refinement unmatched by many other tulips. Plant in generous groups for maximum visual impact, as single bulbs do not carry the same dramatic weight as bold sweeps of pink.
