Description
Tulip Northcap is a refined Double Early tulip, prized for its densely layered, peony-like blooms that open in the very first wave of spring colour. Its petals are pure, snowy white with the faintest hint of cream at the base, creating a luminous effect that brightens borders and containers even on grey Irish mornings. The full, rounded flower shape offers a sense of opulence and formality, while its shorter, sturdy stems ensure it stands strong against spring showers and gusty Atlantic breezes.
Flowering from early to mid-April, Northcap is one of the earliest doubles to announce the season. Its compact but lush form makes it especially effective for pathway edging, formal parterres, and containers near patios or doorways, where its crisp white tones bring freshness and light. In larger public or civic schemes, mass plantings of Northcap create a striking carpet of clean, elegant white, working as a neutral backdrop or as a bold monochrome feature.
While not highly fragrant, Northcap sometimes carries a faint sweetness in sheltered spots — a subtle detail best appreciated when planted close to seating areas or walkways. As with most double tulips, its biodiversity value is limited because of the densely packed petals restricting pollinator access. To balance this, Northcap combines well with open, nectar-rich bulbs such as Muscari armeniacum, Scilla siberica, or species Narcissus like Thalia. These companions extend ecological benefits while providing colour and textural contrast.
Northcap thrives in sunny, free-draining soils enriched with organic matter, though it will tolerate partial shade in urban or woodland-edge gardens. Planting in groups of 10–15 bulbs together creates the most striking effect, with the rounded white blooms catching low spring sunlight and glowing softly at dusk. It is also a highly valued cut flower, lasting well in arrangements and adding sophistication with its layered petals.
