Tulip Trauttmansdorff is a compact early tulip that produces bright pink-red flowers with a distinctive silvery sheen on the outside of the petals, giving spring displays a polished colour effect at a practical low height. Plant in courtyard planters, hotel entrances, estate border fronts, civic beds, public garden edges and compact commercial landscape schemes where planting where compact height, early colour and distinctive close-view flower detail are required.
Greigii Tulip Trauttmansdorff is a compact early tulip for planting where the display needs strong colour with a more refined finish than a plain red dwarf tulip. Its key feature is the contrast between bright pink-reddish blooms and the pale silvery sheen on the outer petals, which gives the flower a frosted appearance as it opens. The flowers are bright pink-reddish, with the outside of each bloom carrying a silvery surface effect.
Trauttmansdorff is best used where the flower can be viewed close up. It suits courtyard containers, raised planters, hotel entrance beds, estate path edges, public garden fronts, civic beds, school grounds and compact commercial landscapes. Its lower growth makes it more useful at the front of a scheme than behind taller narcissus, Fosteriana tulips or mid-season Triumph tulips.
Greigii tulips are valued for compact growth, large flowers in proportion to the plant and decorative foliage, often with purple or maroon markings. This group character gives Trauttmansdorff value beyond flower colour alone, especially in close-view spring planting.
Use Trauttmansdorff with blue muscari, early crocus, low narcissus, pale yellow tulips, compact white tulips and simple spring bedding. It can be planted in repeated groups for a clear pink-red early display, or used in containers where the silvery outer petal detail can be seen from close range
