Description
Tulipa praestans Shogun is a compact botanical tulip giving early colour, low-growing habit and more flowers per bulb than a standard single-stem tulip. Shogun has a short, sturdy habit, usually around 15 to 25cm, with several flowers carried on each stem. The blooms are soft orange to marigold-orange, sometimes showing yellow towards the petal tips and warmer red-orange tones near the base.
Tulip Shogun is best used where detail matters rather than in distant mass bedding. It works well in courtyard pots, raised planters, public garden edges, estate paths, rockeries, front-of-border planting, sheltered civic displays and naturalised-style schemes. Its lower height makes it useful in windy or exposed gardens where taller tulips may be less reliable, provided the soil is free-draining and the planting area does not sit wet through winter.
The multi-flowering habit gives extra display value as it is useful for starting the spring tulip season early. It is a reliable y perennial and suitable for naturalised planting schemes, rockeries, gravely areas and borders and pots.
Shogun combines well with early narcissus, muscari, crocus, low alliums and other species tulips. It is especially useful for Irish trade planting where a more natural, botanical look is required instead of a tall formal tulip block.
