Description
Lilium candidum, or the Madonna Lily, is a time-honoured species known for its tall, elegant stems bearing pristine white, trumpet-shaped blooms with a powerful and sweet fragrance. Flowering in early summer, it brings both visual drama and historical resonance to planting schemes.
Highly valued in traditional gardens, ecclesiastical sites, and cultural landscapes, it thrives best in well-drained, alkaline soils in full sun. Will naturalise in sunny meadows. Unlike most lilies, it produces its foliage in autumn and overwinters as a basal rosette, making it best planted undisturbed in permanent schemes.
Pollinator friendly, especially to bees.
