Description
The ruffled flowers of the Iris germanica ‘Night Owl’ have a near black, dark purple colour. The upright petals have a slightly different colour than the drooping petals. This gives a nice colour contrast within one flower. The lower petals is the so-called ‘beard’ and is why these Irises are called ‘Bearded Iris’. These stunning flowers bloom May to June and is a hardy perennial that grows well in sunny to partially sunny gardens, pots, and can be used in indoor flower arrangements . The plant has thick rhizomes which should be planted shallowly and almost horizontally as soon as possible after receipt. Loosen the soil well and improve heavy garden soil by mixing in sharp sand. Make a mound in the planting hole. Place the thick rhizomes of the bearded Irises about 1 cm below ground level on the knoll with a distance approximately 25-30 cm apart.
