Description
Narcissus Paperwhite is an early-flowering, highly fragrant multi-headed daffodil, renowned for its pure white star-shaped blooms borne in clusters atop slender, upright stems. Reaching 30–40 cm in height, each bulb produces multiple flower stems, each carrying 5–10 elegant blossoms with a strong, spicy-sweet scent that fills the surrounding air. Its pristine colouring, early timing, and intense fragrance make it a standout cultivar for forcing, pot displays, and cut flower production, as well as for sensory and sheltered outdoor schemes.
Paperwhites thrive in full sun and well-drained, sandy or loamy soil, and are especially effective when planted in containers for terraces, roof gardens, and entrance beds, or in protected south-facing courtyard borders. Though often grown indoors, Paperwhites can also be planted outdoors in mild coastal areas of Ireland, particularly in walled gardens, greenhouse borders, or sheltered civic beds where late frosts are less severe.
Their high scent value and massed floral display make them ideal for hospital reception planting, hospitality venues, retirement homes, and schools with sensory gardens. The blooms’ open structure offers good access for hoverflies and early-season pollinators when grown outdoors, and their rapid forcing cycle makes them a favourite for event displays, spring floral tablescapes, or interior horticultural installations.
Narcissus Paperwhite is best paired with Hyacinth Carnegie, Anemone coronaria The Bride, or Tulip White Prince in both indoor and outdoor applications. Whether used in commercial-scale interior floristry or in courtyard pollinator schemes, it brings both elegance and ecological utility.
